Microdermabrasion Denver
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive spa procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the skin by treating sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other unwanted surface skin problems. This procedure uses a gentle stream of tiny particles to exfoliate the outer layer of skin, leaving fresh, younger-looking skin and a renewed appearance. Microdermabrasion may be combined with other procedures such as chemical peels to obtain maximal benefit.
Procedure
During the microdermabrasion procedure, Susan Strasburg, RN, plastic surgery nurse, will use a handheld device to transmit tiny crystal particles across the targeted area of aged or damaged skin to gently pare away the surface layer. As the skin is being exfoliated with the paring, it is suctioned away with a vacuum tool so that the fresh, healthy underlying skin remains.
This procedure is performed in Dr. Bershof's medical spa, Body By Design, and does not require any anesthesia to be used. There is no downtime associated with this procedure, and patients can return to work or other regular activities immediately after. You may experience mild redness for about an hour after the procedure, but this usually goes away on its own. Most patients can achieve noticeable results after a series of five to ten treatment sessions spaced one to two weeks apart. Often, a home skin care program combined with office microdermabrasion and spa peels affords maximal results.
Results
The microdermabrasion procedure offers patients effective results that are visible immediately. Patients can benefit from a reduced or eliminated appearance of acne scarring, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), as well as improved skin texture and reduced pore size. In addition to its cosmetic results, microdermabrasion also helps enhance circulation and lymph flow within the skin layers, allowing skin to be healthy on the inside and outside.
The results of the initial series of treatments are long-lasting and can be further prolonged through follow-up maintenance treatments. Nurse Strasburg will recommend additional treatment sessions or other treatment options for you after a thorough evaluation of your skin.
Risks
Microdermabrasion is considered safe for all skin types and is especially effective for Asian and dark-skinned patients who may be at risk for skin discoloration with other types of deeper peel treatments. There are no serious risks associated with microdermabrasion, although some patients may experience mild redness and irritation after treatment.
It is important for patients to avoid sun exposure after this procedure, as the some of the skin's natural protection may be temporarily removed during microdermabrasion. It is also important to choose an experienced medical spa to perform your treatment, as improper use of the machine may result in discoloration.
