Celebrating National Birth Defects Prevention Month
Sunday, January 15, 2023This January, join us in celebrating National Birth Defects Prevention Month! Congenital disabilities are common, costly, and often preventable. Every 4 ½ minutes, a baby is born with a congenital disability in the United States.
There are many different types of congenital disabilities, ranging from heart defects to problems with the brain and spine. Some defects can be minor, while others can be life-threatening.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor about ways to reduce the risk of congenital disabilities. And, if you have a child with a congenital disability, know that you are not alone. There are many resources and supports available to help you and your family.
Why is It Important to Prevent Birth Defects?
Congenital disabilities are a leading cause of infant death in the United States. Each year, about 20,000 babies in the United States are born with heart defects. Congenital disabilities of the heart and other blood vessels are the most common type of congenital disability, accounting for about 1 in 4 of all congenital disabilities.
Congenital disabilities can also cause lifelong disability. About 1 in 33 babies in the United States is born with a congenital disability.
There are many ways to prevent congenital disabilities. About 70% of neural tube defects can be prevented with folic acid.
How Can You Prevent Birth Defects?
The best way to prevent congenital disabilities is to get early and regular prenatal care. This care can help identify problems early when they are most likely treatable. Prenatal supplements, such as folic acid, can also help reduce the risk of some congenital disabilities.
Are There Treatments for Birth Defects?
Some defects, such as cleft lip and palate, can be corrected with surgery. Treatment may involve surgery, drugs, or other therapies for other defects, such as heart defects and spina bifida.
If you have a child with a congenital disability, many resources and supports are available to help you and your family. You can talk to your doctor, or contact a local or national support group.
